JOHN 11–12

The Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-54) - this story is recorded only in the Fourth GospelRembrandt, Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

Jacopa Bassano: Christ in the House of Mary, Martha, and LazarusBefore the Passover; The Anointing at Bethany (John 11:55--12:11) - this story has some similarties with Mark 14:3-9, Matt 26:6-13, and Luke 7:36-50, but only in John does it take place in the house of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus
  • Christ at Simon the Pharisee (ca. 1620) - oil on canvas; a variation on the same theme; also by Rubens - from the Web Gallery of Art
  • Christ in the House of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus - by Jacopa Bassano (1500's) - tenth image on the webpage of the "Hospitality Art Exhibit" (St. Anthony Shrine Lobby, Boston; July 1998)

Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem (John 12:12-19) - this episode is narrated in all four Gospels (Mark 11:1-10; Matt 21:1-9; Luke 19:28-40), but only John explicitly says that the branches were from "palm" trees
  • (images coming soon)

The "Hour" of Jesus (John 12:20-50) - this Johannine conclusion to the "Book of Signs" would be difficult to depict in art
